Managing Virtual Storage

Virtual storage management is a critical component of any IT infrastructure. Unlike physical hardware, where it is easy to change out devices or upgrade them to more efficient ones, this type of storage is a bit more complicated and requires the right management tools to get the most value out of it.

Virtualization is the most efficient way to reduce complexity. It lets you combine resources and create a storage solution that can handle a larger amount of data. Virtualization is available on many platforms, like network appliances, that offer central storage for your apps or virtualized storage software which uses the underlying hardware in order to deliver the storage capacity of a pool.

For instance, a network appliance could use a physical Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI SAN to present a pool of storage that appears to be one physical disk to the server or host. It takes in input and output requests (I/O) and transfers them to another location on the storage pool, without the host or server being aware of what’s happening behind-the-scenes. The mapping granularity dictates how quickly meta-data can be updated, how much space is required during a migration, and how quickly the physical location can be marked free.

Virtualized storage solutions also offer high availability through mirroring data across multiple servers. This means you won’t lose crucial business data when one of your server nodes fails. The data will be automatically transferred to other healthy servers within the cluster.
