Regardless of the age or structure of the organization, each board establishes a set of essential responsibilities for its board members. This includes ensuring that the assets of the nonprofit are managed with care and safeguarding shareholders’ interests, and showing loyalty to governance regulations even when they are not in a person’s best interest.

Participation in Meetings and Attendance

Board members should be capable of attending meetings in person or online. This includes examining the agenda for meetings in advance and actively taking part in discussions and making decisions. Board members must also be involved in committee meetings in order to gain an understanding of the organization and its work.

Financial Management

This includes preparing and re-reading budgets, managing reserve funds, and making sure that assessments are taken care of. The board must have an understanding of the finances of the community to help guide decisions and manage risk.

Policy Compliance/Governing documents

This is a crucial job that requires an in-depth understanding of all federal, local and state laws. This will ensure that the community is continuously in compliance and that the board is able to take appropriate decisions in the situation of an emergency. This also means that you have to be able to address residents’ concerns and questions, and enforce the rules when necessary.
